Day 22 & 23 of unemployment: Cookie attack!…and getting organized

January 25, 2010

The past two days have been about cleaning, getting organized, and making cookies. I have several food porn installments to share with you, all of which are extremely yummy. Michael’s had a crazy coupon event yesterday in which your entire purchase was 25% off between 4 and 8 p.m., so even though I had just been there on Friday, I had to go and take advantage of the deal….I HAD to, o.k.?! My craft stuff has been living in an old box and a garish red bag I won at our white elephant party this year, and after some inspiring words about the new year, fresh start, get your life together, blah blah blah, I decided yesterday was also a good time to get organized. Also, the cat frequently mucks about in my craft box, I’m always finding teeth marks on stuff and often times things are wet with cat spit when I pick them up, so I know she’s been trying to ingest things that are bad for kitty. The other week she managed to eat some raffia I used to wrap Christmas presents and we found a lovely raffia-laced pile of cat vomit in the corner. So…many reasons to get organized. Here’s what I came up with:

The first drawer is all my floss, on their bobbins and in separate bags according to color, my hoops, needles, etc.:

Second drawer is all my card-making stuff:

Third drawer holds my books, patterns, textiles and some random stuff:

Organization is fun! For some reason I felt the need to stay up til 1 am doing all this…it was mostly putting my new floss on the bobbins and labeling them that took up a lot of time. I was also possessed to make cookies yesterday. My favorite chocolate chip recipe is from a Williams & Sonoma cookie book, but I like to add other stuff to the mix. Namely, this other stuff:

Cranberries, oatmeal and chocolate chip cookies are the fave around here. I made a double batch, but here is the single-batch version (I’ve made it so many times, I don’t even need to look at the book):

1 1/2 Cups flour

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

–Sift these items together on wax paper, set aside–

1/2 Cup butter

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup light brown sugar

1 egg

1 teaspoon vanilla

–Cream soft butter until light and fluffy. Add sugars and beat until smooth. Add egg and vanilla and beat until incorporated. Add dry mixture a bit at a time and beat until all dry mixture is incorporated and batter is smooth but thick.

1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

1/2 cup rolled oats

1/2 cuts sweetened dried cranberries (I use Craisins)

–Stir into batter and spoon onto un-greased cookie sheets.

The recipe makes 4 dozen cookies, but I like to make my cookies a bit larger, so for me I only get two dozen.

YUM.  The rest of my day today was pretty much spent doing this:

And other such stuff. Boo. I really don’t like cleaning, pretty much put me in a crap mood for the whole day. Eric found something while cleaning his office that brightened my day:

This is “The Language of the Fan.” I got this on a historical home tour in the French Quarter of New Orleans on our trip there this past summer (yes, we went to New Orleans in July…yes, it was HOT). I thought this was pretty awesome. Anyways, Eric cooked to two awesome meals today. For lunch he made Thai Beef Salad:

And for dinner, Tofu, Mushroom and Tofu Spicy Ramen:

Also YUM. This is definitely one of my favorite dishes we’ve been making lately. You can email me if you want the recipe. Stats for the day:

People I talked to today besides my husband: unknown (there are people coming to my house tonight but I don’t know how many)

Number of places gone to today (this is new): 1

Today’s pair of pj’s = no pj’s today (or yesterday)

Showers taken = 1

TV watched today = Friday Night Lights, season 2

Minutes spent in the Hazzard dojo = 0

Jobs applied for = 0

Stitching project = Black Apple banner for April (see previous post)

I’ll likely post my progress on the banner project tomorrow, I haven’t had a chance to work on it yet today. I’m still in a pretty sh*^#y mood for some reason. Perhaps I am just restless and wanting to know what is going to happen. I got my first unemployment check in the mail today, huzzah! Til tomorrow…
